Scheduling for Scholar Orientation
OIE hosts an orientation and immigration check-in for new scholars every Thursday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Within the first week of your arrival, email OIE at oie@andrew.cmu.edu to register for the next orientation session. This is a required meeting for scholars in J-1 immigration status and is recommended for all new scholars. During orientation, we also complete the immigration check-in that is required for all new scholars in J-1 status.
In your email to OIE, be sure to include a photocopy of your passport, visa, I-94 departure card, and DS-2019 form, as well as any other immigration paperwork. Spouses are also welcome to attend the orientation session.
The orientation sessions are intended to assist visiting scholars in J, H, F-1 Optional Practical Training, and other immigration/visa categories in getting acclimated to Â鶹¹ÙÍø and Pittsburgh. New scholars and visitors find the orientation session to be helpful. In addition to immigration and visa matters, we also discuss practical matters such as applying for a social security number, health and health insurance, housing, banking, transportation, and more.
